East Berkshire is a different job. Under Bracknell, Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Ascot, Windsor and Slough the Chalk is confined beneath the Lambeth Group and the London Clay Formation, both effective aquicludes. The Wellington College Borehole near Crowthorne proved 105 metres of London Clay alone, with a further 18 to 28 metres of Lambeth Group beneath it, so reaching the Chalk in that part of the county means well over 150 metres and casing the whole way through. A borehole starts with a desk study and a site visit. A soakaway borehole is a deep, cased drainage borehole that takes surface water down past impermeable ground into strata that will accept it. It is the answer where a conventional soakaway fails its percolation test. In east Berkshire that is common, because the London Clay Formation blankets Bracknell Forest, much of Wokingham borough, Windsor and Maidenhead and Slough beneath the sands and gravels, and clay does not percolate.
The same problem turns up on the Downs for a different reason. Clay-with-flints caps the interfluves and hilltops around Compton, East Ilsley, Yattendon and the Lambourn Downs, and that cap impedes infiltration, so hilltop soakaways in otherwise free-draining Chalk country fail more often than owners expect. A borehole taken through the cap into the Chalk beneath can solve drainage that has already defeated trenches and crates.
Design has to protect the aquifer as well as clear the water. Soakaway boreholes are cased and sealed through the shallow ground so the discharge goes where it is intended and surface contamination does not follow it down. On the Thames terrace gravels around Datchet, Horton and Colnbrook the water table sits close to the surface, so the available depth is limited and the design has to account for it. Discharging surface water to ground can need permission, and that is worth checking early rather than late.
